he CAPSTONE NCD Course Development Workshop successfully concluded after three days of intensive discussions aimed at finalizing the curriculum for six modular short courses on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), from the 22-24 January 2025. Hosted in Utrecht, the workshop brought together key stakeholders from the CAPSTONE consortium, including representatives from higher education institutions in Ghana and The Gambia.
The primary objective of the workshop was to integrate Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) into the CAPSTONE NCD short courses, ensuring an innovative and competency-driven approach to learning. Participants worked collaboratively to review, revise, and align the course curricula while preparing for accreditation applications. A significant milestone was the decision to structure the NCD short course programme into a cohesive framework that meets the accreditation requirements of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ghana, and can be adapted to other institutions.
One of the key outcomes was the agreement to offer these NCD courses as part of a specialization within the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme at UHAS. Students will have the opportunity to select four modules, with three being mandatory for specialization. These courses will also be made available as electives for other MPH specializations.
Looking ahead, a Train-the-Trainers (ToT) workshop will be held in May 2025 in UHAS, Ho, Ghana, where the refined short courses will be introduced to faculty members and stakeholders. Additional steps include a pre-implementation survey to assess the current educational landscape concerning CBL, the formation of working groups for research and publication planning, and the preparation of accreditation documents.
The CAPSTONE NCD initiative is a significant step forward in strengthening public health education in Africa. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, the consortium aims to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary competencies to address NCD challenges effectively. The next major milestone will be the CAPSTONE Consortium Meeting in May 2025, where further developments will be discussed.
