Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) care in sub-Saharan Africa is receiving a boost as the CAPSTONE West Africa Project convened stakeholders to enhance the health workforce’s capabilities to manage, prevent, and control NCDs across the region.

The inaugural Community of Practice (CoP) meeting held on November 5, 2024, brought together representatives from higher education institutions, public and private sector organizations, civil society groups, and health advocacy organizations.

They were from the Ghana Health Service, Ghana NCD Alliance, the School of Public Health at KNUST, the Fred Binka School of Public Health at UHAS, and other prominent institutions.

The primary focus of the CoP meeting was to lay the groundwork for a harmonized and sustainable curriculum for NCD capacity building.

It targeted Ghana, Gambia, and potentially other West African regions.

CAPSTONE Co-Investigator Prof. Paul Amuna emphasised the importance of a multi-sectoral approach towards the initiative.

“The CAPSTONE project is about strengthening capacity for NCD education across the West African sub-region,” he noted.

Dr. Arti Singh introduced the objectives and structure of the CoP, stressing the group’s role in sharing specialised knowledge to foster broader societal impact. She remarked, “The main objective here is to share some specialised knowledge among ourselves and learn these lessons so that we can impact society as a whole.”

The meeting concluded with a presentation from Dr. Daniel Boateng, Co-Investigator at KNUST School of Public Health, who outlined CAPSTONE’s upcoming plans for the consortium and shared a roadmap for future engagements.

Participants expressed optimism about the CoP’s potential to bring about transformative changes in NCD capacity building across the region .
